you know how to work a gun, son?
L!STEN.UP. Meeps will be hosting a mafia game on these here forums because she loves you. This little thing that Meeps has dressed up to an extent is the sign-up thread. Meeps will be posting:■ characters: profiles, backgrounds, and, of course, the users that play them. ■ setting, plot, and general teasers because she loves you. ■ updates on the mafia game, if there are any to speak of. ■ rules rules rules. ■ explanations of roles.
ON TO THE POST.
 these are the basics.
if you don't read these, we don't want you back. MAFIA GAME STARTS AFTER WEREWOLF; DON'T FORGET IT. <3Mafia is a classic parlor game which takes place in a town. In the town, there is a Mafia on the loose that is killing the townspeople. The townies’ goal is to find the Mafia before they kill all of the townies.
Procedure:
■ Meeps selects roles and assigns them randomly to the players.
■ NIGHT PHASE. The special roles and Mafia choose a person to use their special role on and private message or IM Meeps with their action. There should be nothing being posted in this time unless Meeps posts it.
■ DAY PHASE. Meeps reveals the actions of the previous night, including any victims and their special roles, if any, in a storyboard. The town then discusses the result amongst themselves, and finally votes on a townsperson to lynch from the town. Whoever gets the most votes is killed. DURING THE DISCUSSION, YOU CAN REVEAL ROLES, WHETHER YOU ARE LYING OR NOT.
■ The night phase and day phase repeats until one side wins. The Mafia can win by having a majority in the town. The townspeople can win by kiling all of the Mafia members.
Generally, to play mafia, we need at least seven people. This is a very minimal game, and I would appreciate it -- greatly -- if we had more than that. This adds to the fun and the roles, of which there are some... very interesting options.
The default roles for a seven person game are townie, mafia, godfather, miller, doctor, detective, and vigilante. More on the roles later on in the post.
There will likely be two mafia, one godfather, and one spy. All of these characters know who each other's role and are expected to work closely; it is recommended that these characters have or get a client that allows them to have chats [AIM, MSN, or gmail come to mind]. Alternatively, you can use the slow, long, and painful way of sending PMs to multiple people at once.
if you ever feel lost or are unsure of what to do, please contact Meeps via AIM, MSN, or private message, all of which can be found easily at the bottom of this post or in her profile. It may seem like a lot to take in at once, but I can assure you that once you start playing, it's not so bad. It is very similar to a werewolf game that just has a lot more roles. Of course, some of the roles are a bit difficult to understand, so, again, drop me a line.
roles?!Woo. Here's where things can get a bit difficult to understand. There is a... a lot to cover on the topic of roles. So bare with me. In fact, if you really don't feel like it, just read over the role you get once I assign them. You won't have as much knowledge on the game, but it's not absolutely necessary to know every role by heart. Hell, I have to look back at the roles everytime I play mafia.
Not all of these roles will be used and a fair amount are only for games with 14+ players. I'm not handing them out unless you can promise me you can be active, while we're at it. Also note that anyone who has played mafia before can say that a lot of these roles are new to them. That's because they were, indeed, made up. These have been testrunned and played multiple times. Don't worry, kids; they aren't broken roles, though a few may seem to be. :]
■ Townsperson: A normal member of the town. Has no special abilities except being able to vote in the daily lynchings. On the side of the town. Meeps calls them townies. Getitgotitgood.
■ Mafia: A member of the mafia. Chooses one person to kill every night. If there are multiple Mafia, they all discuss amongst themselves and then choose one person to kill. On the side of the Mafia.
■ Detective: Chooses one person to “detect” every night. The detective finds out the identity of the person being detected. On the side of the town.
■ Doctor: Chooses one person to “heal” every night. The doctor can heal him/herself ONCE per game. The person being healed cannot be killed when targeted by the mafia. On the side of the town.
■ Thief: Chooses one person to “thief” every night. The person being thiefed has their special ability disabled for the night. The thief can only disable the mafia if there is only one member of the mafia left. On the side of the town.
■ Rambo: Can kill three adjacent victims. One time use. On the side of the town. This role in particular will most likely be avoided at all costs. It generally leads to unfair and cheap wins, but if we get a large enough group I might let our Rambo here run free.
■ Vigilante: Can choose one person to kill every night. The vigilante is only allowed to kill a limited amount of people per game (usually 3 times per game). If the vigilante and mafia kill the same person, the vigilante dies as well. On the side of the town.
■ Bus Driver (aka Cheese Wagon Driver): Chooses two people each night. These two people have their fates reversed. For example, if the Bus Driver switches Joe and Jack, and Joe is being targeted by the Mafia, Jack is the one to die during the next day. On the side of the town. Thievings and deaths are the only roles that are reversed between the two people. For example, if Bus Driver switches Joe and Jack, and the Thief has used his effect on Jack, then Joe is the one to get Thieved.
■ Godfather: The head of the Mafia. The godfather is the one to tell Meeps who the Mafia is planning to kill. Also, when searched by the detective, the Godfather comes up as a townsperson. On the side of the mafia.
■ Saint: A holy member of the town. If this person is lynched, after the town finds out that this person was a saint, they are horrified and the person who first voted for the saint is lynched instead. The saint is not safe from the Mafia, however. On the side of the town.
■ Armor: A member of the town with armor. <_< He or she cannot be killed by the mafia or vigilante, and can only be killed by lynching. On the side of the town.
■ Village Idiot: The Village Idiot knows who the Mafia are, and the Mafia know who he is. The Village Idiot’s job is to confuse or disorient the other players. He cannot be killed by the vigilante, nor can he be detected by the detective (he will come up as a townie if detected). If all of the mafia die but the Village Idiot is still alive, he still loses. On the side of the Mafia.
■ Miller: The opposite of the Godfather. He is an innocent townsperson (and will be told so when the host assigns roles), but will come up as a member of the Mafia when investigated by the Detective. On the side of the town.
■ Cult Leader & Followers: The cult leader is chosen at the beginning of the game, and can recruit a member to his cult after each round. The cult are also highly recommended to have AIM, MSN, or other clients that allow for chats. The cult functions as an entity separate from the town, but if there are no more mafia and there are still townspeople and cult members, whoever has the majority wins. Also, if the cult recruits a mafia, the mafia should still be killing with his mafia brethren, but his alliance is now with the cult.
■ English Teacher: The English teacher chooses one word every night, with the approval of Meeps. The first person to say that word gets exemption from the same day’s lynching, as well as exemption from a mafia death the next night. The English Teacher can say the word any number of times, but will not get the bonus him/herself. On the side of the town.
■ Bomb: The Bomb can choose one person to kill once a game. Both he and the other person dies. On the side of the mafia.
■ Watchman: Cancels all actions for one night. One time use only. On the side of the town.
■ The Plant: The Plant chooses one word every night, with the approval of Meeps. The first person to say that word dies immediately. If the Plant says the word, he or she does not die. On the side of the town.
■ Insomniac: The Insomniac has the same power as a detective, but can only use it once for the whole game. However, his/her results are broadcast to the whole town anonymously. On the side of the town.
■ Sheep: The sheep is unable to vote independently, and can only vote someone or vote to abstain when at least one other person has voted for that person or voted to abstain. On the side of the town.
■ Illusionist: The Illusionist can protect one person from any action for one night, whether it be from a detective or from a mafia. One time use only. On the side of the town.
■ Spy: The Spy has the same powers as the detective, but is on the side of the mafia. On the side of the mafia.
■ Gravekeeper: Once during a game, the Gravekeeper can choose any one person to raise from the dead. The action can only be messaged to Meeps during a night phase. At which point, Meeps will revive the chosen person in the next storyboard, and does not reveal who the gravekeeper is. On the side of town. got it?If this seems confusing, I urge you to sign up anyway. Everything gets simpler when you take it one step at a time -- and again, I'm always here, and I've been playing mafia for 3 years. If you need help, you can ask the host. :P rules rules rules.
and I swear if you break a single one I'll break your face. <3
yo. These are my rules. They're pretty simple. Obey them plz.
■ Meeps' word is law as far as she's concerned. If she wants you out, you're out. If she wants you to change your posts, she expects you to do so. If she posts rules regarding the game, you follow them. She's not hosting to be disrespected and have someone screw the entire thing over. :D
■ Storyboards will work a bit differently. I will be writing the night sequences and will be announcing who dies, who did what, gravekeeper, etc. However, that is all I will do in most cases. I want players to decide what their characters do for the majority. No morning scenes will be written by me except for special occasions; generally, the characters are free to do as they please as soon as I finish up who done what during the night. :] Just, please, make sure that they all meet somewhere eventually. I'm going to ask -- very, very nicely -- that you don't stray too far. I don't want ridiculous fairy tales in this. I just want to allow the characters to establish a routine or do what they want for a bit, as opposed to me writing their script for them.
■ Game starts at night. As soon as you get your role, PM/IM me your action. Yes, the cult can recruit, and every other role is free to do exactly what their role is intended to.
■ Once you're dead, you're dead. No spoilers and no coming back or something lame if I don't tell you that the gravekeeper revived you. Respect the other users; let them play the damn game. Deceased mafia will not announce the other mafia or else, so help you god, you will face the wrath of a very. very. very. angry Meeps.
■ I might let you join mid-game or if someone is inactive, on the assumption that you didn't sign up in time and-or didn't think you'd be able to play well. Given, you probably have to be on my good side and I will probably just give you a townie role since if we all of a sudden started seeing thievings after you joined, it would be sort of obvious, eh? ;]
■ I'm with Shrine on this one. I want you roleplaying your characters, pretty please with a cherry on top. :D
 plot and setting and... stuff.
once upon a time in a land far, far away...
